Protocol Description: PPTP Provides VPN services to remote users. See detailed PPTP description earlier in this document. How the Exploit Works.: By sending a stream of packets using Netcat targeting port 1723, the attacker is able to cause the server to blue screen within a few seconds of initiating the attack. This is caused by the NT PPTP Server having a flaw in it's' code, causing it to be unable to handle certain types of data packets. These malformed packets will cause the system to generate memory leaks in the kernel. This attack sends malformed packets to the listening TCP/IP port 1723. This is not a flaw in the protocol itself, it is actually a flaw in the implementation of the protocol by the vendor Microsoft.
Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol PPTP CyberHoot.
Nowadays, PPTP is considered obsolete for use in VPNs because of its many known security deficiencies. Nevertheless, PPTP is still in use in some networks. The phrase Point to Point refers to the specific type of connection created by the protocol.
PPP, IPSec and PPTP guide Point to Point tunneling Protocol.
PPTP has its issues and is considered as a weak security protocol according to many experts, although Microsoft continues to improve the use of PPTP, and claims issues within PPTP have now been corrected. PPTP is not as secure as IPsec and cannot secure two networks like IPsec can.
Configuring a PPTP VPN Tunnel to ProSAFE/ProSECURE routers Answer NETGEAR Support.
NOTE: This document assumes that your ProSAFE/ProSECURE router is either receiving a public IP address on the WAN interface, or that the gateway devices have the correct port forwarding or DMZ configured, so that TCP port1723 is open for the ProSAFE/ProSECURE routers. These gateway devices must also allow VPN pass-through. The values used in this scenario are for this example only; certain values will depend on the setup of your network. Setup SRX5308 as PPTP Server. Click PPTP Server. Select Enable, and enter Starting to Ending IP range. Select an authentication method: MSCHAPv2 in this example. Select and Encryption type: MPPE-128 in this example. Note: IP range must be different to existing VLAN range in use. Create PPTP users. Choose PPTP user. Enter username and password accordingly. Once the account is created it will show in the list of Users in section Users Users. Create PPTP VPN on Windows client using Windows 7 for this example. Click Start Control Panel Network and Sharing Center. Click Set up a new connection or network.

What Is PPTP: Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol.
PPTP was designed to improve on its predecessor Point-to-Point Protocol, a data link layer Layer 2 protocol designed to connect two routers directly. While it's' considered a fast and stable protocol for Windows networks, PPTP is no longer considered secure.
Enable passthrough for PPTP traffic.
Enable passthrough for PPTP traffic. You might need to specifically allow Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol PPTP traffic if you use PPTP tunneling. For more details about the product and how to configure features, click Help or press F1. To allow PPTP passthrough, add matching Access rules with the following two services.:

PPTP/L2TP client Keenetic.
The advantage of the PPTP tunnel is its ease of configuration and availability. PPTP provides secure data transfer over the Internet from a smartphone, tablet or computer. MPPE protocol can be used to protect PPTP traffic data. In Keenetic, besides PPTP, you can also set up an L2TP Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol connection.
Point Tunneling Protocol an overview ScienceDirect Topics. ScienceDirect.
This frame, with header and trailer, is placed inside another packet and sent over the network between what PPTP calls a PPTP access concentrator PAC and a PPTP network server PNS. PPTP is a client/server protocol with the PAC as the client and the PNS as the server.
